RAAF KC-30A Cane
This cane was commissioned to be made by the Commanding Officer of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) for her previous Adjutant, a RAAF Pilot, as a gift. As he was about to post-out and begin his transition to flying the KC-30A, I believed a swagger stick could be made that would best represent his flying career. Although the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) do not carry swagger sticks, I took inspiration from the UK's Royal Air Force Warrant Officer Cane, consisting of a black body and chrome fittings. As he would begin flying a KC-30A, I made the knob to resemble the main body of the KC-30A turbine, and the ferrule to resemble the rear of the turbine. Both fittings are made of aircraft grade aluminium alloy (Al2024-T3) rather than stainless steel or chrome, given the link to aviation and because the stick is intended to be decorative rather than see any daily use. The knob houses a ring that mimics turbine blades that actually spins on ball bearings around its central axle, allowing it to be quite the fidget-spinner if the owner is ever bored in his office.
